The Cost of a Lurcher Pup

Recommended Posts

Having seen a lot of topics on here regarding Lurcher breeding,Puppy Prices, stud Prices and so on,was interested in everyone opinion on the cost of a Lurcher puppy.

I know that some are obviously going to be given away to mates kept for yourself and so on but the remainder of the litter, what would You charge, everyone is different in their approach to breeding lurchers and how much they spend on rearing a litter, which would obviously effect the cost of the pups.

The last litter of lurchers I bred was over Two Years ago and I was fortunate to gain the services of a cracking Greyhound to use over my German Shepherd bitch, however the time and effort I spent rearing the litter I think I ended up doing it for the love of it,When You add up the costs on top of that of Worming tablets Parvo jabs food again I am fortunate I have a food mincer and a regular source of flesh and bone but it still takes time to mince it up.

I would say I spent a good three hours per day on average doing something with the litter.

So lets just say average litter of lurchers no stud fee costs how much per pup

p.s I haven't got any to sell just interested what everyone thought and how much did You pay for yours

I would rather pay someone £60 £70 £ for a pup where the breeding is honest and no poor lies about what the parents have done and still doing.   Some people believe that because a certain name may

thats why u always see mistreated dogs and rescued lurchers. if people dont put a good price tag on their litters you get all sorts of people coming to get them. £80-£100 is a joke imo as most kids take that to school with them nowadays. if people were more responsible and only bred when they wanted to renew their line instead of using their supposedly "best friend" to pay the bills only sensible people would have dogs in the first place, maybe then u could give them away eh instead of every tom in the village having one. i may be wrong but just my 2 penneth worth :)

id personally give them away mate, the way i see it is, if i cant afford to breed a litter, then i wont, id never be looking to make money back,

Spot on mate... if the dogs are bred right you wont have any trouble finding the pups homes. If i ever did breed a litter money wouldnt come into the equation

£120 but same as above, and thats still cheep even jacks go for £200 to day. lurchers+terriers 15 years ago were about £80 quid, so £120 is a fare price to pay

I don't think there's any hard and fast rule. I have had dogs for free and paid up to £250 for one recently but shes worth every penny and the owner of the parents had over 30 years of written and photographic documented history of the lines and I knew exactly what I was getting as I had seen the outcome of the previous litter from these lines - will take my time with her and she's gonna be a fantastic bitch I am sure.

Paid £150 for my pup (beddy whippet) and i'm well pleased with her I think thats about as much as I'd want to pay for a dog my jack was £100. Cracks me up that people are willing to py £500-£800 pound for any cross with poodle in it Jakadoodle, labradoodle, cockerdoodle what ever way you look at it it's an over priced cross breed.......mongrel:blink:

No matter how well bred a lurcher is, i don't agree with asking 700 for a pup just because it has a good Saluki as a parent? To me, if the dogs were really worth over seven times a 'normal' price, they wouldn't need to be advertised atall, there would be ques of people with a bit of coin wanting one (i.m.o).. How much better can a 700 pound dog be than any other that's been well bred off good working parents? I think most dogs of decent breeding can be trained to a high enough standard, and i think that asking 700 quid will only end up with people with more money than sense buying the dogs, just so they can tell their golf buddies how great it is!!! That's just as irresponsible as selling them for 30 quid on a shite housing estate.. Money doesn't make people better owners or trainers, so i think it's down to the breeders to have a 'sixth sense' about the person wanting to buy a pup. Even so, dogs will always end up in the wrong hands, so it's down to people like me to rescue them and turn them into proper stuff  which i'm quite happy to do... just because i've not paid for all of my dogs doesn't mean i'm less than anyone else.. My dogs are trained to a very high standard, and the comments i get REGULARLY of normal folk and hunters alike, makes the hard slog worth it!! :D
